Bob's study of electrical engineering at Clemson was interrupted by WWII. He enlisted with the Army Air Corp and became a B-24 bomber pilot for the 15th Air Force based in Italy. His plane was shot down and he became a prisoner of war in Germany. Upon returning stateside, he married Opal (Buie Berly, deceased 2015), completed his degree at Clemson, and was employed by Carolina Power & Light Co., retiring after 39 years. He remained in Air Force Reserves until he reached the rank of Lt. Col.
Bob and Opal lived in Marion, SC, Sumter, SC, Wilmington, NC, Cary, NC, and Raleigh, NC. They moved to Plantation Estates in Matthews, NC over a decade ago and made this their final home, while remaining members of First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh. They enjoyed their time in Matthews near their children and grandchildren.
Bob's hobbies included gardening, raising camellias, and woodworking. He enjoyed making furniture and he made hundreds of wooden toys for Toys for Tots.
Private burial will be in Raleigh NC on April 15, 2016. A memorial service will be held at Plantation Estates in Matthews, NC on April 23, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the auditorium (reception following).
