“CAMPBELL, JOHN ALEXANDER, Shuqualak, Miss., born at Chesterfield, S. C., June 30th, 1819, is of Scotch extraction, his parents having emigrated from Scotland to Carolina in the early days of the republic. His literary education was acquired at the Gwinnett high school, Ga., and he prepared himself for his professional career at the univ. of La. His first place of settlement was in the vicinity of Shugualak [sic.], Miss. He is one of the original members of the Noxuba [sic.] co. med. soc., and is also a member of the State med. asso., treasurer of the same body two terms. A few days after the organization, in 1861, of the 5th Miss, reg., Confederate States army. He was appointed its ass't surg., and at the battle of Shiloh was promoted to a surgeoncy [sic.], by order of Gen. Bragg, "for efficiency on the field." He served in that capacity until the end of the war, during which time he performed many operations, amputations, resections, ligations, etc., etc. He was married May 20th, 1849.”

He married Roseanna "Rosa" Love, the daughter of William Greenlee and Agnes (Haley) Love of Richmond and Anson Counties, North Carolina
