Nancy was named after her paternal aunt Nancy (Baker) Grafton. Her Aunt Nancy was her father Grafton Baker's younger sister who married a double cousin through both the Grafton and McGavran family lines.

Nancy was the youngest of seven children of Grafton Baker (1776-1849) and his wife Mary (McDowell) Baker (1787-1853). Nancy and most of her older siblings were born in Carroll County, Ohio before her parents moved west to Hancock County, Ohio in 1834.

Nancy married John Ebersole on April 17, 1836 in Hancock County, Ohio. This marriage produced three children - 2 daughters and one son Austin Ebersole.

Widowed for 21 years, in her later life Nancy went to live with her youngest daughter Arial and her husband Omer Fox.
