James was born in Carroll County, Ohio before his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Grafton Baker, moved to Hancock County, Ohio in 1834.

James married Louisa Slight on April 18, 1841 in Hancock County, Ohio. The marriage produced six children. All six children have memorials attached to this page. Three of the children are buried in this same Baker-Hamblin Cemetery - youngest son John F. Baker (1856-1889), eldest daughter Hester (Baker) Hamblin (1843-1915) and daughter Mary (Baker) Hamblin (1850-1933). Two of James's daughters married two Hamblin brothers.

James was founder of the Baker-Hamblin Cemetery. He donated the land for the cemetery, in the 1840's, from a parcel of his own farm acreage. His acreage was a one quarter share of his father Grafton Baker's originally purchased acreage. James retained the original deed which was signed by President Andrew Jackson in 1834.

The location of James's widow Louisa's burial site is currently uncertain. She outlived him by 24 years and is not known to have remarried.
