Married Maria Elise Reitz 1846. William & Maria were the parents of Mathias & Martha(Mauer)

J. William Meister was born in Niederdunzebach, Germany, on February 21, 1817, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jakob Meister. The Meister family can be found in the books of German passengers who came to the U.S.A. in the 1800's. J. William, age 42, his wife M. Elise, age 40, his son "Matheus", age 16, and his daughter M. Elise, age 14, were aboard the ship Hansa which left from Bremen, Germany, and arrived in New York on March 15, 1864. After their arrival in New York, they settled in Franklin Grove, Illinois, a small town east of Chicago near the Iowa border. Records from the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Franklin Grove, Illinois, state "Martha Elisabeth Meister" was confirmed on April 21, 1867, her mother, Maria, and brother, Mathias, in attendance. In the 1870 census, only three years later, William, age 48, Maria, age 47, and Mathias, age 23, were still in Lee County, China Township, Illinois. Their daughter, Martha Elisabeth, was also listed in their home with her husband, John Mauer, and their son, Edward Mauer, 4 months old. It is interesting to note that the census taker had problems understanding the family as he wrote Edward's name down as "Adaworth". In the 1880 Lee County, Illinois, census, Mathias was listed as the head of the household with his wife, Martha, their children William, Henry, Adam, John, Carl (Charles) and also his father, William, a retired farmer. Maria unfortunately had passed away in 1874. John and Martha Mauer were listed in their own dwelling in Lee County, China Township, Illinois, with their five children, Edward, age 10, Charles, age 7, George, age 4, and twins, Lizzie and Louisa, both age 2. The Mathias Meister and John Mauer families left for Sac County, Iowa, shortly after the 1880 census, while William remained in Franklin Grove and lived on the farm he owned. In the final years of his life William suffered from cancer but waited until the very last weeks of his life to make the trip to Kingsley, Iowa, to be cared for by his son. According to the record of his death in the Plymouth County courthouse, William passed away at 8:00 P.M. on 2 November 1895 at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 5 days from a cancerous tumor of the bowels, the record claiming he had the disease one year. His death record lists his occupation as "musician", the informant being his son, Mathias. It is believed he was an accomplished violinist from his youth in Hesse Cassel, Germany, and that he played at many of the nicer hotels in and around the Chicago area.

OBITUARY in The Kingsley News dated November 7, 1895: William Meister of Franklin Grove, Illinois, father of Mathias Meister of this place, died at the latter's home about four miles northeast of Kingsley, Saturday, November 2, 1895.
