Leon Bates

Leon "Chigger" Bates, 75, of Milton, Ky., died Monday, Aug. 1, 2005, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Louisville, Ky.

He was born June 7, 1930, in Turners Station, Henry County, Ky., the son of Eugene and Belle Tingle Bates. He was a retired employee of the Kawneer Corp. and a farmer. He was a member of the Pentecostal faith and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Rose Bates; three daughters, Rita Sutherland of Carrollton, Ky., Delsie Bates of Milton, Ky., and Rochelle Wilson of Warsaw, Ky.; one son, Levy Bates of Carrollton, Ky.; one brother, Robert Bates of Carrollton, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gerald Bates; and four brothers, Raymond, William, Vernon and Franklin Bates.

Services will be at 11 a.m. EDT Thursday at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home in Carrollton, with burial in the Port Royal, Ky., Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday at the funeral home.
