Opera Singer. A soprano, she is remembered for her career at the Vienna State Opera (VSO). Raised in Vienna, she had a lifelong affinity for music, and while she was somewhat overshadowed by her sister Leonie (1926-1998), she was to build a strong following of her own. Establishing herself at the VSO, she sang 939 performances of 46 roles, some secondary but many of them leads, her assignments including a Priestess from Verdi's "Aida", both Frasquita and Micaela in Bizet's "Carmen", Donna Elvira from Mozart's "Don Giovanni", Woglinde of Wagner's "Das Rheingold", both Mimi and Musetta from Puccini's "La Boheme", Marianne of Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier", the First Lady from Mozart's "The Magic Flute", Lola in Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana", Nedda from Leoncavallo's "I Pagliacci", both Ludmilla and Marenka in Bedric Smetana's "The Bartered Bride", Verdi's two Leonoras from "La Forza del Destino" and "Il Trovatore", Liu of Puccini's "Turandot", La Contessa from Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", and one of the toughest roles in all of opera, the tragic title lead of Puccini's "Madame Butterfly", a part she sang 46 times at the VSO. Lotte had a parallel career in operetta as one of the stars of the Vienna Volksoper and was heard many times at Wagner's Bayreuth Festival, singing virtually every soprano comprimario role in the Wagnerian canon. Designated Kammersangerin (KS) in 1968, she was named an Honorary Member of the Vienna State Opera in 1977, and retired following a December 3, 1987 presentation of Wagner's "Die Walkure". She lived out her days in her native city; at her death from respiratory problems she could be heard on a large number of live and studio recordings.
