Michael was born in Germany and arrived in New York on July 25, 1854 on the ship Vater Gruner. Traveling with him was John Gegner, born in Germany in 1832 (presumably his brother). They settled in Erie County, OH and were listed in the Sandusky City Directory in 1960 as living together and both being Blacksmiths by trade.
Michael married Sophia Stubel and had John (b.1859), Lawrence (b.1862), and Sophia (b.1864). Then, marriage documents show that he married Catharine Klein (1842-1888) on Feb. 28, 1865 in Erie County. They had William (b.1868), Edward (b. 1869), Fred (b. 1871) and Justine (b.1873).
Michael died on 2/6/1877 in Erie County according to Probate records. The cemetery lists burial on Feb. 8, 1877. Catharine outlived Michael by 11 years, passing away in 1888. No records of her burial have been found to date.
