Jan. 17, 1945 - Dec. 10, 2016 Sharon Smith Yates, age 71, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior on December 10, 2016. She was born to Ernest and Verla Mae Smith on January 17, 1945, in Mobile, Alabama.

She was a member of the Citronelle High School Class of 1963 and attended the University of South Alabama. She was passionate about education and inspired countless students during her many years of service with the Mobile County Public School System. She shared her love of sports in her years as a physical education teacher and fostered a love for reading in her students during her time as a media specialist. Sharon loved to be involved in sports, from her high school days of cheerleading to her many years of service as a volleyball and softball official. Her greatest joys in life were her faith in Jesus Christ and love for her family. Her favorite moments were those spent with her children, grandchildren, and her sisters, who were her best friends; cheering at her family members' sporting events; and arts, crafts, reading, and baking with her grandchildren. She was a member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church and a faithful participant in Dayspring's Bible Study Fellowship.

Sharon is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Verla Mae, and her brother and sister-in-law Gene and Eula Smith.

She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Harley "Chico" Yates; son Andrew (Alexa) Yates, and daughter Summer (Scott) Howard; grandchildren Luke, Lily, Ransom, River, and Rhett; step-daughters Melanie Williams and Angie (Jimmy) Young; grandchildren Ashley, Jarred, Josh, and five great-grandchildren; brothers Terry (Sue) Smith, Jerry (Patsy) Smith, Gary (Melanie) Smith, and Ernie Smith; sisters Marcia (Charles)Turner, Debra (Stan) Browning, and Michelle (Robert) Wilkins; nieces and nephews. Sharon, "MeMe," was known for her generous spirit, her love for her family, and her delicious cooking, which thankfully, she passed on to her daughter. She passed her love of eating on to her son. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. 2 Corinthians 12:9.

The service will be held Friday December 16, 2016 at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street at 1:00 pm. Visitation will be from 11:00-1:00, Burial will follow at Mobile Memorial Gardens.
