David was the Son of William Johnston and Sarah Thompson. He married Eliza Jane Eagen, Daughter of James Eagen and Catherine Campbell, on November 15, 1869 in Kings County, New York.
The couple had six children--five boys and one girl. Contrary to his Wife's 1910 Census enumeration of seven children born to the couple, I have only been able to find SIX. Also, David's obituary backs up proof of six children born and six living--at least at the time of his death in May of 1895.
David's and Eliza's children are:
1. John Johnston,
2. George Johnston,
3. William Johnston,
4. Samuel Johnston,
5. Sarah Johnston Murray and,
6. David Johnston.
David was laid to rest at Cypress Hills on May 23, 1895. Please note that, even with military honors that David is NOT buried at the other Cypress Hills Cemetery. That cemetery was called by this author and I was informed that they had no record of his burial. Also, the Nationwide Gravesite for Veteran's has no indication of David being buried in a Veteran's Cemetery (The other Cypress Hills Cemetery is ONLY for veteran burials and not even their widows/widowers are allowed to be buried in that cemetery, so I was told by staff of the cemetery.
