Betty was born on April 16, 1943, in New Britain, daughter to the late Salvatore and Helen (McCooey) Castiola. She grew up in Plainville and attended local schools, graduating from Plainville High School in 1961. After graduation, she went on to attend Mount St. Mary College and CCSU, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in science. She furthered her education and attended University of Hartford, where she earned her master’s degree. Betty began her teaching career at the local elementary schools, Wheeler and Toffolon. She left teaching to become a mother. Betty also established a career in the real estate business and in the insurance company, working for Cigna as executive handling claims. She had a profound love for trips to the family home in New Hampshire. Most people know Betty as a legislator, but above all, Betty was a wife, mother, and grandmother who will be missed dearly by her loving family.
In addition to her husband, Gary, Betty is survived by her son, Gary Boukus Jr., of Plainville; her daughter, Helen Santini and her husband, Jason, of Plainville; her four grandchildren, Zachary and Alexander Santini and Logan and Maddison Boukus, all of Plainville; her brother, Steven Castiola, of Plainville; and her sister, Teresa Czak, of Southington.
A Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 94 Broad St. in Plainville. Burial will follow in Saint Joseph Cemetery in Plainville. Friends and family are welcome to gather at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St. in Plainville, on Tuesday, Dec 6, from 3 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Betty can be made to Our Lady of Mercy Church, 94 Broad St., Plainville, or to the VA Connecticut Healthcare System, 555 Willard Ave, Newington, CT 06111, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
