Mary “Penny” Marie Gordy, age 92, of Mattoon passed away at 8:07 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral services for family and friends will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Schilling Funeral Home with Pastor Matthew Froeschle officiating. Burial will follow at Humboldt Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Schilling Funeral Home.
Penny was born on April 12, 1924 in Coles County the daughter of Turley and Edith (Hubbartt) Burgess. She married V.R. “Red” Gordy on June 12, 1948. He preceded her in death on July 9, 1985.
Survivors include her daughter, Kay Lynn Tuschen of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Dr. Steve R. (Patti) Gordy of Bethlehem, PA; sister, June Baker of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren, Terry (Elizabeth) Tuschen of Middleton, WI, Christina Witczak of Colorado Springs, CO, Andrew Tuschen of Colorado Springs, CO, Rebekah (Brad) Miller of Bethlehem, PA and Laura (Robert) Maderas of Bethlehem, PA; great grandchildren, Ruby, Ben, Joey and Penny Miller, Anna and Emma Maderas, Emma Vandervest and Isabella Witczak; as well as many special friends including, Joan Cole who recently passed away. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband; five brothers, Roe, Rex, Ted, Tom and Bob; three sisters, infant Ruby Burgess, Ruth Aiken and Madge Burgess; mother-in-law, Petrodina Gordy; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Helen Gordy.
Penny was a homemaker and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mattoon, the P.E.O. and Women Connected. She volunteered with the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Auxiliary Guild for 25 years. Penny also volunteered for the Salvation Army in previous years. She cherished time spent with her family and friends. Penny will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
