Edward Quill graduated from West Point in 1957.

Major (then Captain) Edward Quill was assigned to the U.S. Air Force 14th Air Commando Squadron at Phan Rang Air Base, South Vietnam.

On February 14, 1968, USAF AC-47D "Spooky" gunship S/N 43-49859 departed Phan Rang Air Base on a close air support mission. The aircraft was shot down just five miles south of the air base, killing all eight of the aircrew on board:
