Assigned to the U.S. Air Force 14th Air Commando Squadron at Phan Rang Air Base, South Vietnam.
Lieutenant Colonel Waldron was the aircraft commander of USAF AC-47D "Spooky" gunship S/N 43-49859, which departed Phan Rang Air Base on a close air support mission on 14 FEB 1968. The aircraft was shot down just five miles south of the air base, killing all eight of the aircrew on board:
