James Millard Gilliland was the fourth of nine children born to the union of Alexander Gilliland and Cynthia Ann Armstrong. His siblings were Minerva Birdine, Walter, Laura, Infant Son, Thomas J., William Walter, John L., and Annie Laura.
James married Laura Emma Hall on December 13, 1877 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. To this union was born Ernest Luchin, Forrest, Aubra, Ora Emma, Roscoe, Annie Pearl, James Garnett, Archie Herbert, Lloyd, William Raymond, Alvin, Walter, and Marion.
