James Hickey was born 30 November 1824 in Ireland. He married Irish born Catherine Quigley 1 July 1860 in Travis County, Texas. The 1860 census found newlyweds James (34 and a brick mason) and Catherine (24) living in Austin.
Daughter Kitty lived from 1863-1867, son Johnny from 1868-1870. Neither lived long enough to appear in the 1870 census. The two year old Kitty that appears in the 1880 census is Katherine born 1877, the younger sister of Kitty born 1863.
In 1870 James was working as a stone mason and the couple had three children, James (9), Mary (5) and Harriet (3). Joseph was born in 1870 after the census was taken. He would die in a hunting accident in 1889.
The family was still in Austin in 1880 and James (55) was a grocer living with Catherine (45), Mary (15), Harriet (13), Joe (9), Mat (7), Jinny or Jimmy [James] (5) and Kitty (2).
The couple had two sons named James. The elder, born in 1861, drowned in Barton Creek in 1874. The younger James was born in 1875 five months after his brother died.
Mary on 14 May 1887 gave birth to a child that did not live the day and she died two weeks later, leaving behind her daughter Agnes born in 1886 and her husband Patrick Duff.
Mary was buried at Mount Calvary (Austin 78722) where her brother Matthew would join her in 1942. Jimmy, Kitty, Harriet, Johnny, Joseph, James and Katherine are buried in Sec 1, Lot 343 of Austin’s Oakwood Cemetery with their parents Catherine and James.
Catherine lost her husband to a sudden heart attack 6 August 1887, two months before their daughter Katherine Elizabeth was born and less than three months after Mary died. James, feeling unwell, had left the family home at 219 West Pecan to go to Dr. Swearingen’s office when according to the local paper ‘he staggered and fell.’
The paper reported a few days later that ‘The funeral of Mr. James Hickey took place yesterday morning from the Catholic Church, and was very largely attended by mourning and sympathetic friends.’
