Thomas and Susanna Kerns Elwood raised a large family and subsequently moved to Missouri. Many of their descendants are presently researching our family history.
WILLIAM ELWOOD'S WILL, ADAMS COUNTY, ILLINOIS:
I, WILLIAM ELWOOD, of the township of Liberty, in the county of Adams, and state of Illinois do hereby make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit:
First, it is my will that my funeral expenses and all my just debts be fully paid. Second, after the payment of such funeral expenses and debts, I grant, desire and bequeath unto my beloved wife ANN (NANCY) and to my son HENRY ELWOOD the farm on which we now reside (Situated in Adams County and known and described as the first half of the South East Quarter of section twenty-five in township two South Range, Six West of the fourth principle meridian) during their natural lives. And all livestock, horses, cattle, sheep, and hogs owned by me and kept there on. Also all the household furniture and other articles of personal property not herein enumerated or otherwise dispatched of in this will during their natural lives after having disposed of a sufficient amount to pay and discharge the expenses and debts of aforesaid, and that at their deaths all the property aforesaid to them bequeathed or so much as there of as may remain in the possession of my son THOMAS ELWOOD and his heirs and assigns forever.
Third, I give and desire unto my three daughters JANE McWILLIAMS, ANN REA, and PRISCILLA LOVEL and to the three children of my daughter ESTHER PRICE each the sum of one dollar.
And lastly, I hereby constitute and appoint my son THOMAS ELWOOD executor of this my last will and testament, revoking and canceling all former wills made by me and ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness here of, I the said William Elwood have hereunto put my hand and the seal the fifth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty-five.
