Funeral services for Bernhard Baerg, 71, Bingham Lake, were held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 1998, at the First Mennonite Church, Mt. Lake, with Pastor John Kroeker officiating. Burial followed the service in the Voth Cemetery, Carson Township, Cottonwood County. Mr. Baerg died on Tueday, February 24, 1998, at his home.Bernhard Baerg was born March 8, 1926, in Butterfield Township, Watonwan County to the late Elizabeth (Krahn) Baerg and Peter Baerg. He grew up in Butterfield Township where he attended rural schools of the county.As a young man, Bernhard served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1955. He returned to the area to take employment.On December 26, 1953, Bernhard was united in marriage to Ernstina Wiens in Delft. Following their marriage and Ben's returning home from the Army, he worked in trucking and as an employee of the Delft and Bingham Lake elevators.For the last 20 years of his working life, Ben had been an employee of the Toro Company in Windom. Since 1958 Ben and Ernstina made their home in Bingham Lake.For many years Bernhard had been an active member of the First Mennonite Church, Mt. Lake. He served as an usher for services and special occasions for many years.As a community minded person, Ben was a fireman for Bingham Lake, served on the City Council and was constable for several years.Most recently he worked for security in the area for the gas pipeline construction. He especially enjoyed fishing up north, as well as in the are whenever possible.He is survived by his wife, Ernstina; three children, DeWayne Baerg, Bingham Lake, Lois and her husband, Tim Cain, Alpha, and Joyce and her husband Harold King Jr., Rochester; five grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters, Esther and her husband, Louis Sawatzky, Warroad, Melvin Baerg, Butterfield, Mrs. Alma Pudwill, West Covina, CA, and Peter Baerg Jr., Marshall.Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Bruce and Carl David and a brother, Harry.
