Nell Abel Monk, 90, of Tazewell, Va., died Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Va. Born April 21, 1926, at Asberrys, Va., she was a daughter of the late Robert and Nannie Hilt Abel. Mrs. Monk was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Tazewell, Va. and was a retired cook, working for Tazewell County Public Schools for 18 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred M. Monk; one brother and seven sisters. She is survived by sons, John Michael Monk and Lewis Edwin Monk and wife, Robin; daughter, Patricia Monk Smith and husband, Greg; brother, Robert Franklin Abel Jr; sister, Mary Ellen Abel; grandchildren, Jeffrey Ray Smith, Amanda Leigh Smith, Laura Page Smith-Itzkowitz and husband, Brad; great grandchild, Sydney Mae Itzkowitz. The family will receive friends from 5 till 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. where funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. with Minister Lee Blackburn officiating. Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, November 11, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Va. Those planning to attend graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. on Friday.
