Johann served in the Civil War. Oct 10, 1861 to May 26, 1864, Johann served in Company I, 41st New York Infantry Regiment. He was discharged by reason of wounds received at Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 2, 1863. Specific wounds are not listed.

Johann's brother, Philipp Friedrich Pfeiffer, also fought in the same NY Union Army. Unsure if they were side by side, or not. But this was a unit made up of German Immigrants and was highly decorated and fought many, many battles. Philipp was later admitted to the Dayton Soldiers home for disability cause by war hardships. That is where he died and is buried.
