Daughter of George Washington Hogan Sr and Helen Goes Ahead
CROW AGENCY - Pearl Hogan, 90, of Crow Agency, passed away Jan. 9, 2010, at the Crow Agency Indian Health Service Hospital.
Ashjawuan dakaakash "Bird in a lodge" was born June 4, 1919, in Crow Agency, a daughter of George W. and Helen Goes Ahead Hogan Sr. She grew up and was raised by her grandmother Pretty Shield in the Crow Agency and the Benteen areas and completed her education in South Dakota. She later received advanced nurses aide training and utilized that training for over 30 years at the Crow Agency I.H.S. Hospital.
Pearl was a faithful member of the Apsaalooke Baptist Church, where she served as an adult Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a social person, who enjoyed beading, powwows and working as an advisor for numerous tribal campaigns. She was a member of the Sore Lip Clan, was a Whistling Water child and was a Crow cultural resource person. She was a very talented grandmother who took pride in making traditional outfits for her grandchildren. She raised her grandchildren with unconditional love, never missing a birthday or family event with an appropriate gift. She was the first Crow woman to own a home without help from any government agency.
Her parents, daughter Eleanor, sons Garland and Pistol Plenty Hoops, sisters Cerise Stewart, Alma Snell, Mamie and Frances Knows Gun, adopted sister Dorothy Hugs, brothers John Wilson and George W. Hogan, Jr. and her Tobacco Society adopted parents John and Amy Whiteman preceded Pearl in death.
Survivors include her daughters Colleen (Walter Eugene) Old Elk Sr. and Cheryle Plenty Hoops; son Ted Hogan; sisters Ferole (Bill) Pease, Ataloa (Gus) Harris, Nellie Sings in the Mountains, Mary (Nelson) Wallace, Mardell (Leo Dan) Plain Feather and Lorena Walks Over Ice; brother Adam (Bernice) Singer; adopted daughters Deanna Stops, Beldean (Blaine) Small, Joen White, Violet and Clara Hugs; adopted sons John (Agnes) Doyle, John (Carol) Bullinsight, Larry (Agnes) Pretty Weasel, Elias (Theo) and Leo Thomas (Tammi) Hugs, Bobby (Norma) and Arlie Stop; nephew/sons Marvin Stewert and Bill Snell Jr.; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; her very close friends include her church family, Alvina Williver, Tom and Lois Whiteman; as well as her extended family including the Deer Nose, Yellowtail, Takes the Gun, Whiteman Runs Him, DuShane and Long Tail families.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, in the Crow Community Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Hardin Fairview Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
