W.D. "Mac" McMains Jr. passed away Oct. 26, 2016 at the age of 82. Mac was born Aug. 31, 1934, in Iowa, to W. D. "Dale" McMains Sr. and Iris Darlene McMains. He moved with his family to Sunnyside, Washington in 1946 where he finished his schooling.
On Dec. 21, 1946, at the age of 17, Mac enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served tours in Korea and Vietnam. While based in Twentynine Palms he met and married Helen Selig.
He remained in Twentynine Palms after his retirement as a master sergeant in 1984. He went on to earn degrees in psychology and counseling. He also served as exalted ruler of the Twentynine Palms Elks Lodge, BPOE 2134, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents, his brother, Charles, and his nephew, Patrick.
He is survived by his nephew, Robert McMains (Carin) and their children Meagan, Nolan and Anna of Everett, Washington. He was affectionately called Todd, or Toddy, a name given to him by his grandmother, by his family.
The family would like to thank those friends who helped Mac as he battled deteriorating health. Special thanks to Carolyn Clark, who cared for Mac the last days of his life.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Twentynine Palms Public Cemetery.
