Garnet Hester Protzman was the youngest of three children born to Hough Coombs Protzman and Rosa Lee Houston.

She was a graduate of West Virginia University. While at WVU she was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club; English Club; Eta Sigma Phi; 4-H Club; Kappa Delta Pi; Kappa Phi; Phi Beta Kappa.

Garnet's 2nd cousin's Geraldine and Sarah Protzman were also members of Kappa Phi at WVU.

On July 21, 1939, Garnet married Richard Diamond Brenneman.

They had three children together:

Carolyn Jean Brenneman (1942-)

Richard Charles Brenneman (1945-)

John William Brenneman Jr. (1947-)

Garnet and her husband Richard raised their children in the Brenneman ancestral home in New Cumberland, West Virginia in Hancock County and they are buried in the Nessly Chapel Cemetery nearby.
