Mathias was the 2nd of 3 sons of Conrad and Maria Magdalena Yerian. He was born in Pennsylvania, probably in Berks County, and in 1790 was in his father's household in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. By 1795 this family was in Wythe County, Virginia. Mathias and his brother Frederick soon went into Tennessee, Mathias eventually settling in Butler County, Ohio, and Frederick going on to Indiana and Iowa.
Mathias married on May 7, 1798, Greene County, Tennessee, to Mary Kyle. The final record of him, and the only one from which we know his age (78), is the 1850 census of Oxford Township, Butler County, Ohio, in the home of his son George.
Mathias may or may not have used the spelling "Yerigan", but a number of his descendants (not all of them) did. Descendants of his older brother, George, used "Yerion" and those of his younger brother, Frederick, used "Yaryan". Cousins used Yerian, Yarian, and Yearian.
