Lifelong learner: Woman who graduated from USU at 98 died Sunday
‎ ‎ ‎ A woman believed to be the oldest Utah State University student ever to receive a degree died Sunday at the age of 100.
‎ ‎ ‎ Twila Brian Boston passed away in her home Feb. 2, according to an obituary sent to The Herald Journal on Wednesday. She was born on a farm in Loa, Utah, on Sept. 7, 1913.
‎ ‎ ‎ In 2012, with the help of her granddaughter, she proudly donned a cap and gown at USU commencement exercises and accepted a B.S. in American Studies.
‎ ‎ ‎ Boston took classes through the 1970s and 1980s but never finished her degree. In 2012, she told USU she wanted to complete the program and conducted an oral history project from home to fulfill requirements.
‎ ‎ ‎ "I was expected to get an education," Boston said of her upbringing, during a 2012 interview with The Herald Journal at her Providence home. "I want that diploma, just like anyone else, and I don't consider myself smarter than anyone else."
‎ ‎ ‎ Her advice for USU graduates was to "never stop learning." According to the obituary, her favorite subjects were history and English. She loved to read and "actively followed" politics on Fox News.
‎ ‎ ‎ Boston entered LDS Nursing School in Salt Lake City at 19, where she met Alva Agee Boston. The couple had four children, and she helped run his private medical practices in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming.
‎ ‎ ‎ After Boston's husband retired, they moved to Cache Valley in the early 1970s to be near family.
‎ ‎ ‎ The family requests that donations be made to the USU College of Humanities and Social Sciences or the American Cancer Society in her name.
