Sarah grew up on the farm in Marion County, Kansas. In 1902 she went to Berne, Indiana to the Light and Hope Orphanage run by Rev. and Mrs. J. A. Sprunger. It moved to Loraine County, OH in 1903 where Sarah continued her work with orphans. In 1913 she went to China as a missionary with the China Mennonite Mission. She was on her way home from China when she died on 2 May 1921 on the ship. The ship carried her body to San Franciso, California. Her body was then brought to Hillsboro for burial.
