August Herman Carow was the son of Henry Carow and Sophia Loche. He immigrated to the United States from Neucustrinchen, Brandenburg, Prussia in 1877. On May 9, 1877, he boarded the steamship, SS Gellert of the Hamburg-American Line, and departed Hamburg, Prussia. He sailed in steerage class via Le Harve, France and arrived at the Port of New York City on May 23, 1877. He farmed with his brother in Linn County, Oregon, where he met and married the widow, Hannah E. (Tucker) Templeman, the daughter of William Hiram Tucker and Nancy Ann Dealy. They had ten children: William, Alvin, Sophia, Mary, Ella and Martha (twins), Elsie, Rosie, Erma, and Hulda. William, Alvin, Elsie, Rosie, and Erma died in childhood of disease.
