Age reported as 40 years on the 1860 census (born ca. 1820), and 42 on the 1870 census (born ca. 1828).

Mary Jane Galer's list of persons interred in the New Cemetery area of Linwood shows: J. W. SHOUP was born in Pennsylvania, died of "congestion"; buried 07 OCT 1871 in Section 1, Lot 307 - Sexton James LYNAH. Galer's source was the sexton's card file (an index). The original burial entry in the sexton's ledger book reports he died aged __ years (number is blank), gives the Section number as A1, and shows he was buried as a resident of Columbus, Georgia (so probably died there).

1860 federal census of Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, Dwelling #856 / Household #856, shows (all SHOUP): Jacob W. (40 PA) gas worker holding no real estate but personal estate valued at $200; Elvira A. (29 GA); Dora (6 GA); and Ellen (2 GA).

1870 federal census of Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia, Dwelling #195 / Household #229 (all SHOUP): Jacob W. (42 PA) gas fitter holding no real estate but personal estate valued at $200; Elvira A. (39 GA) keeping house; Dora (16 GA) going to school; Nellie (11 GA) going to school; Lella (8 GA) going to school; Emma (6 GA); and Richard R. (3 GA).

This grave is evidently not identifiably marked. Others reported to be in City 1-307 include: a child of Mrs. SHOUP, buried 22 MAY 1872 (aged 6 years); Mrs. E. V. SHARP, buried 25 MAY 1886 (aged 55 years); Nellie SHARP, buried 06 NOV 1891 (aged 35 years); and Leila SHARP, buried 20 NOV 1901 (aged 41 years) -- her surname is plainly SHARP in the sexton's record, but someone in a later hand wrote "Short," and the corresponding card in the sexton's card file (an index) is under the incorrect surname "Short."

No owner is recorded for City 1-307 on the lists of lot owners. This lot corresponds to Lot 143 of Section A in Dolores Autry's "Historic Linwood Cemetery" book (edited by Lea Dowd et al.), Volume 1. Autry reports no evidence of graves in this lot, and the map of Linwood Cemetery compiled by John Kennedy shows here "lot appears to be empty."

On 30 OCT 2017, suggested edits were submitted that the initial "J." stood for the name "Jacob" and that he was born in 1828 in Pennsylvania. His age on the census is not consistent, and at any rate, an age on a census in most instances doesn't tell us an exact year of birth. I will need a primary source record for his date of birth.
