Gene was born on November 12, 1931 to Bernice (Stoxen) and Henry Simes of Hebron, IL. On July 3, 1954, he was united in marriage to Joanne Schnurr of Wilmot, WI.
He is survived by their children, Karen (Phillip) Lalor, Steven (Sue Staab) Simes, Susan (Dean) Coon, & James (Joleigh) Simes; grandchildren, Shanda (Cory) Gulvas, Sasha (TJ) Wieczorek, Nicolette (Vincent) DeCicco, Sammie (David) Mayerck, Trevin Simes, Brandon Simes, Thomas Fletcher, and Abigail Folkers; great-grandchildren, Grayson, Harper, Aiden, Alexandra, Ashlyn, Ellis, Julian, Madison, Danika, Annabelle, Adalynn, and one due in February.
Gene was preceeded in death by his wife, Joanne; his parents; brother, George Simes; and sister, Natalie Ann Simes.
Gene graduated from Alden-Hebron High School in 1949, served in the Army, and graduated from the "ag short program" after returning to the family farm in Hebron, IL. Gene was actively farming until recently. He served for 30 years in various positions on the Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Department, as a Hebron Township Trustee for many years, and on the Federal Land Bank Board of Directors. He and his family enjoyed themselves at the "second home" on Lake Namakagon, Cable, WI. Gene will be remembered for his love of family, the land, friends and frozen custard at Adrian's.
A memorial gathering will take place from 1:00 to 3:00 on Monday, October 3, 2016 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hebron, IL. A memorial service will begin at 3:00 with dessert fellowship featuring frozen custard to follow. Graveside services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations for an agricultural scholarship being set up in Gene's memory would be appreciated, or memorials made to JourneyCare Foundation.
