TECUMSEH — John "Jack" William Aitken, 87, died Sept. 28, 2016, at Belle Terrace in Tecumseh.

On Sept 3, 1929, John "Jack" W. Aitken was born on a farm east of Vesta to Courtney and Ellen (Murphy) Aitken, their 7th child.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Oct 1, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tecumseh, with the Rev. Craig Clinch officiating.

Rosary was recited Friday evening. Interment was in the St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery, with full military honors by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Team and Tecumseh VFW Post 8221. Nephew Bob Aitken served as the cantor at the mass. Another nephew, Andy Aitken, provided bagpipe music during the recessional and at the gravesite.

Jack attended Limrick country school and graduated in 1946 from Tecumseh High School.

Jack married Eileen Broady in February 1954. Five children were born to this union: Patricia Ann, Timothy John, Kathryn Marie, Jean Ellen and Susan Maureen. Jack and Eileen lived on the family farm where Jack farmed with his dad. Jack had always used Archer Petroleum Lubricates and in 1961, he accepted the job as district manager of south central Nebraska. The family moved to Ravenna. Jack retired from Archer in 1987.

Jack and Wauna (Lawrence) Russell were married in 1984 and in 1988 moved to Tecumseh.

Jack collected automobile literature from an early age. He put together and collected many model cars. He particularly loved the Dusenbergs. He had drafted a car design and had a dream of someday seeing it built. Jack was quite an artist. He also loved oak trees and planted 13 different varieties of oaks (110 trees), many started from acorns.

Jack served from 1950 to 1959 in the Army National Guard and retired as a Master Sergeant in Company A 195th Tank Battalion.

Jack's family was his pride and joy. He enjoyed visiting and sharing family history. He spoke often about his pride in the military, the family coal mine in Illinois and the steer named Challenger that was purchased from his grandfather by the University of Nebraska in 1903. Challenger was the first animal ever purchased by the university and was the Grand Champion at the World's Fair in St. Louis.

He served on the school boards of Limrick country school, Vesta Public Schools and Ravenna Public Schools. Jack was also a cancer survivor for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Wauna Aitken of Tecumseh; children, Patricia Shrader, Kathryn (Tim) Lammers and Jean (David) Luth of Ravenna and Timothy (Cindy) Aitken of Dannebrog; son-in-law, Lon Zeller of Salem, S.D.; stepchildren, Nancy (Mike) Naperstek of Plainview, Daniel (June) Russell of Lincoln, Mary (Owen) Stockton of Glenwood, Iowa, and Don (Freida) Russell of Santa Fe, N.M.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Angie Shrader, Jessica, Andrew and Joshua, Matt Shrader (Amy), Evan and Dylan, James Aitken, Joshua Aitken, Cameron Aitken and Courtney Aitken, Justin Lammers, Krysta (Kyle) Huse, Kason and Kolby, Amanda (Matt) Nielsen, Hayden, Clinton Luth, Britney (Matt) Hagsten, Lily Sue, Derek Zeller; stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
