widely known as a philosopher and physicist who maintained a laboratory at his home. He did research work on physics relating to light and sound. He often spoke at the Cosmos Club. His work "Matter and Some of Its Dimensions" has gained favor in the eyes of leading contemporary students of philosophy.
He was 53 years old. Survived by his widow, Mattie V Carr. He has two sisters, one of whom, Mrs Sterret, lives in this city.

He was born at Warrenton and educated at the Hillsboro Military Academy and the University of Virginia. He owned several cotton plantations in the State. More than 20 years ago he came to Washington. IN 1885 he married Miss Martha Van Riswick, who survives him.
Two sisters, Mrs W Sterrett and Mrs H L Matthews of North Carolina, and a brother, Elias Carr of North Carolina survive him.
He was a "society man". He was an expert in the theory and use of radium. The private library at his home was a popular meeting place for scientists. He wrote several books which were well received in this country and abroad.

In a codicil to his will he left his valuable laboratory to the A and M College, Raleigh. reported on Nov 4. (estimated to be worth about $100,000)
"Expert in the theory and use of the X-ray." Many of the instruments and apparatus in his laboratory were unique , made especially for him by the best builders of such articles in the world. He possessed one instrument made of wood more than 200 years old. so that he could feel assured that the wood had settled. Organ builders were in the habit of sending pipes to him for testing.
He was a member of the Cosmos Club, the Chevy Chase Club, and Philosophical Society of Washington and the National Geographical Society.
