On April 9, 1946, Joe married Mary Sanchez, who survives him. They made their home in Center, Colorado. He is also survived by their children, Patricia (Ramon) Trujillo, George (Eva) Barela, Marlene Lovato, Tom (Melissa) Sanchez, Janet (Pat) Archuleta, Mark (Josie) Barela, Denise Trujillo, Betty Casanova, and Paula (David) Trujillo. He leaves behind 25 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one on the way, 1 great-great-grandchild, 1 brother Charlie (Dorinda) Barela, and 1 sister, Marie Mansanares.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Donnie Barela, brothers Andrew and Joe Levi Barela, and son-in-law Lee Trujillo.
Joe was a huge sports fan. While serving in the US Armed Forces, he pitched minor league baseball while stationed in Japan. Upon, returning home, he continued his love of baseball by coaching the Center Old Timers, and spent many a year playing fast pitch and slow pitch in several valley leagues. He was an avid Raiders fan for many years, but would often bet on the Denver Broncos.
In his earlier years, Joe worked, alongside his father, for local farmers. He became a truck driver hauling local produce and started farming with Jim Selters. Eventually, he started his own business, Joe Barela and Sons Trucking.
Joe also enjoyed golfing and bowling, and was a member of the Elks Lodge for several years. Mary and he managed the local Deluxe Tavern in the mid 60s. He served on the Center Town Board of Trustees, was an honorary member of the local honor guard, and was honorably named Grand Marshall for one of Center's Christmas parades.
Cremation was chosen, and a Rosary will be held at the St. Francis Jerome Catholic Church in Center, Colorado on Thursday, Sept 1, at 7pm. A. Memorial Service will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church located at 313 Craft Dr. in Alamosa, Co, on Friday, Sept 2 beginning at 11am. Burial will follow at the Colorado State Veterans Living Center in Monte Vista, Colorado. Following the burial, a dinner will be served at the Center Schools Commons Area (cafeteria) located at 500 S Broadway, Center, Colorado. Family and friends are welcome.
