Mary was born June 20, 1947, in St. Cloud, Minn., to Carl and Alice Nierengarten. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1965 and from Hennepin County General Hospital nursing program with an R.N. degree in 1968. She married John Fogarty, also of St. Cloud, in 1969 and after moving to Northfield, gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, and a son, Michael. Mary worked as an operating room nurse at Northfield Hospital and Fairview Southdale Hospital, a consultant for a medical software company, a clinical educator at Fairview Southdale, and as a nurse manager at Children's West in Minnetonka. She and her husband worked and lived in Taipei, Taiwan, for four years.
Mary returned to college to complete her undergraduate degree at Metropolitan State University in 1996 and was named the Outstanding Undergraduate Student. She volunteered for international medical missions to Peru and Mexico and traveled throughout the world with her husband, family and friends. She loved to spend time in her garden, cook, read, listen to music and do the crossword puzzle on the deck. Her favorite times were those spent with family and her dear friends.
Mary is survived by husband, John; son, Mike of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Elizabeth Fogarty (fiancée Adam Higgins) of Greenville, N.C.; mother, Alice Nierengarten of St. Cloud; mother-in-law, Alice Fogarty of St. Cloud; sisters, Carol Nierengarten of Sartell, Jane Kitchar of Elkhart, Ind., and Sharon Nierengarten of Sartell; brothers, Dennis Nierengarten of St. Cloud and Gary (Carol) Nierengarten of St. Cloud; sisters-in-law, Peggi (Joe) Groebner of Sartell and Anne (Steve) Oberman of St. Cloud; brothers-in-law, Robert (Chris) Fogarty of Savanah, Ga., and William (Kathy) Fogarty of Thief River Falls. She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Nierengarten, and father-in-law, Robert Fogarty.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Northfield, followed by a light lunch. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to one of Mary's favorite charities, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly.
