A PIONEER GONE

With the passing away of Jas. H. Criswell, at his home in Selden last Saturday afternoon at 2:45 o'clock, another one of Sheridan county's pioneers and highly respected citizens has answered the final summons and journeyed to that "bourne from whence no traveler e'er returns."
Mr. Criswell was born in Licking county, Ohio, July 26, 1836 and died at Selden, Kansas, April 6, 1912, aged 75 years, 8 months and 11 days.
On October 16, 1859 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Bowsher, moving to Missouri immediately after his marriage, where he resided until the Civil War broke out in 1861. He enlisted in the Union army June 25, 1861, serving 90 days, and was then mustered out of the service. He then moved to Van Buren county, Iowa, where he lived until May, 1888, coming from there to Phillips county, Kansas, where he remained for a year and a half, moving from there to his farm one mile south of Selden in the fall of 1889, living there until 1897, when he moved to Selden, where he has resided until his death.
Deceased is survived by his widow, two sons and four daughter, J. H. and J. W. Criswell of Cline, Oklahoma, Mrs. P. S. Nason, Mrs. O. E. Hanshaw, Mrs. S. Badgley of Selden, Kansas, and Mrs. F. R. Robinson of Hoxie, Kansas, besides a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was converted and baptised in the Baptist faith in 1875. After moving to Selden he united with the M.E. church in 1893 of which he was a member until his death.
The funeral was held in the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, by Rev. L. Munro, after which he was laid to rest in the Selden cemetery.
"Thank God for the dear ones safe today
Safe at home on the happy shore:
Where the smile of the Father beams for aye,
And the shadow of pain shall beam no more"
By One Who Loved Him

We wish to thank our friends and neighbors and members of the G. A. R. for their kindness during the sickness and death of our beloved husband and father.
