Helen was 12 years old when her father, a Corporal in the 18th Massachusetts Infantry, was killed at the battle of Fredericksburg, VA on Dec. 13, 1862. Following her father’s death her mother moved the family from Middleboro, MA back to Philadelphia.
Helen married James Idler, a Paper Hanger, in Philadelphia prior to December 1870 when their son Charles was born. Other children included Maud, born in 1873; James, born in 1880; Estelle, born in 1884; May, born in 1886; Clarence, born in 1888; and Helen, born in 1891. The family moved from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, NJ around 1887-1888 as the last two children were born in that city.
