Amy's 1st husband, Benjamin Wheaton, was born Nov 30, 1749 in New Milford, Litchfield Co., CT and died in 1776 in New York, King's County, NY, during the American Revolution.
"Three of Augustus Wheaton's uncles were in the Revolution, Benjamin, Sylvester and Salmon. Benjamin and Salmon were captured and imprisoned in the "Old New York Sugar House," but both became so ill they were released. Sylvester went to bring them home. He carried one of them outside the city, left him by the roadside and went back for the other. On his return he found the first brother dead, and the other brother died on the way home".

During the British occupation of New York (1776-1783) the Rhinelander Sugar House was turned into a notorious prison.This was a brick warehouse into which American prisoners of war and private citizens, suspected of helping the patriots, were thrown. Sanitary conditions were frightful and starvation was a constant threat, so that its evil reputation was well earned, and its death toll unbelievably high.
