Mary Etta Sanders, 83, of Hickory, passed away surrounded by her family, Monday, September 5, 2016 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

Born February 8, 1933 in Burke County, she was the daughter of the late Mamie Young and John Sanders.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Clifford Sanders and Huitt Sanders; a sister, Katheryn Hefner; and step-mother, Rachel Barger Sanders.

Ms. Sanders was an active, life-long member of First Baptist Church in Hickory, where she was the former Treasurer of her Sunday School class. She was a graduate of Hildebran High School and had retired after 33 years of service as a telephone operator from Centel.

She was a very giving person to many charities, volunteered for the Hickory Soup Kitchen and was active with the Eastern Burke County Senior Center in Hildebran.

Mary was the rock of the family and like a mother to all. She is survived by her brother, James C. (J.C.) Sanders and wife Ramona of Shelby, NC; sister-in-law, Lucille Sanders of Hickory, NC; nieces and nephews: Miya Teague, Calvin Hefner, Jane Brightwell, Phillip Hefner, David Hefner, Tommy Sanders, Priscilla Sanders, Judy Benthall, David Sanders, Ben Sanders, Clark Sanders, Johnny Sanders, and Denise Harper; as well as, many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Hickory with the Rev. Dr. Phillip Reynolds and the Rev. Rendell Hipps officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church from 10 – 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 339 2nd Ave., NW, Hickory, NC 28601 or the Hickory Soup Kitchen, 131 Main Ave., NE, Hickory, NC 28601.
