HICKORY - Katheryn Sanders Hefner died peacefully at home surrounded by her family after a brief battle with cancer.

She was predeceased by her husband of more than 60 years, Foy C. Hefner Sr., who died in 2005; and her parents, John H. Sanders and Mamie Young Sanders.

Surviving her are her children, Miya Ruth Teague (Thomas Wiley Teague), Foy Calvin Hefner Jr., Jane Elizabeth Hefner Brightwell, Phillip Allen Hefner (Thad Cline), and David Eugene Hefner (Angela Hefner). Also surviving her are six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to accompanying her husband Foy on his many business trips to Italy, forging international business ties with Comez Industries, Kat enjoyed and was proud of her various missionary work for the Lutheran Church in Colombia, South America, and her representation of the church in San Francisco at an early AIDS awareness conference. Kat and Foy were instrumental in the conception and creation of Camp Lutherock in Newland. Kat also was active in the Hickory Woman's Club, as well as the American Business Women's Association, being past president. Kat founded and ran Kay Leasing, an industrial business machines subsidiary of Comez Industries. She was an avid supporter of education in the Catawba Valley area and hosted the annual Teacher's Tea for more than 10 years. But above and beyond all of her accomplishments, Kat was most proud of her children and their families. She relished in each one's successes and achievements and adored all the children brought into the family. She truly enjoyed being the matriarch of a large and boisterous clan.

Katheryn was predeceased by two siblings, Clifford Sanders and Huitt Sanders; and is survived by two, J.C. Sanders and Mary E. Sanders.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
