Mary Alice Garrett, daughter of John W. and Martha Hand Garrett was born in Marion County, Ohio, June 6, 1861 and died May 24, 1948 at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 26 days. She just fell asleep. She was united in marriage to David Summerville at Scotland on the 26th day of September 1878. They walked together, the high ways of life for only 22 short years. The husband being called home on November 24, 1900.
Ten children blessed this home with the exception of one, John Harry, who preceded her in death on October 26, 1942.
All are living; Oscar of Bloomfield, William Edward of Bloomfield, Mrs Emma Mullis of Newberry, Thomas F. of Linton, Everett of Rockville, Mrs Anna "Kate" Carr of New Albany, Mrs Edith Allen of Indianapolis and Earl and Alva of Dana, Indiana.
On August 22, 1914 she was united in marriage to William Clark Lamb. He preceded her in death on April 12, 1933.
When Uncle Sam called, she saw the boys go into service. She gave 13 grandsons, all of whom she wrote to monthly and she lived to see them all return.
She was united with the Methodist Church in her early girlhood years. She was zealous for the cause of the church, a lover of the scared word and a mother to those who needed her care. Her quiet life has been a blessing and the thought of her which remains to us, a sweet inspiration.
Those who are left to morn the loss, are the nine children, 43 grandchildren and 69 great grandchildren. Also, three brothers; William Garrett of Farmersburg, Frank Garrett of Burns City, and Calvin Garrett of Sandborn and one sister, Mrs John Dickey of Montana and a number of step grandchildren and a host of friends.
"Where the river of life flows soft and sweet. through the garden of God so fair, these broken links we shall find her waiting there, and somewhere yet on the hilltop of the country that has no pain, she waits in her beautiful doorway to bid us welcome again.”
