John Walker was the son of Andrew & Jane (Walker) Garrett. He was born & raised in Marion County, Ohio. He married Martha Hann on May 27, 1859 in Tully, Marion County, Ohio.

John mustered into Co B Ohio 1st Calvary Regiment as a Private on February 27, 1864. He fought in the battle of Atlanta, assault on Kenesaw & duty in Dallas, Georgia, Alabama & several other places. John was discharged in Parkersburg, West Virginia & mustered out May 19, 1865 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. That summer John moved to Scotland, Greene County, Indiana.

John & Martha had 6 known children:

Calvin Bundy Garrett
Minnie A Garrett

John owned 1400 acres & operated one of the largest nurseries of his time with his sons. They originally started their nursery in Doans, Greene County, Indiana in 1893 & in 1904 they moved to Brown Township, Martin County, Indiana. Today this land is where the Crane Golf Course is in Burns City, Martin County, Indiana.
