She was born August 14, 1928, at the family home in Darby, Idaho, to Virgil and Georgia Hillman Penfold. The birth was assisted by her grandmother Hillman. She graduated from Teton High School where she was active in basketball and band.
On April 13, 1945, she married Don Ard in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple. In 1986 they were honored as Business Man and Woman of the Year for their 37 years of hard work and dedication to the community with Ard's Glass and Paint.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She began sewing at the age of nine and was a talented seamstress, making many beautiful quilts and dresses for her children and grandchildren. She loved sports both as a participant and coach. She also loved to dance and served as a dance director in the church at both the stake and ward levels. She and her husband were avid square dancers and have entertained for local programs for 30 years, including leading the Centennial March at the 1983 Rexburg Centennial Ball.
With her family she enjoyed water skiing, traveling, and spending time at their cabin in Island Park, Idaho. It was always "open house" at the Ard's. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and she will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include her husband, Don Ard of Rexburg; children and their spouses, Dennis Ard (Marsha) of Oregon City, Oregon, Terri Orr (Bennett) of Salmon, Idaho, Shayne Ard (Linda), Manette Shirley (Kirk) and Jolene Carpenter (Ron), all of Rexburg, Michelle Clark (Mike) of Phoenix, and a foster son, Robert Barrett (Lois); three sisters, Elaine May (Jim) and Maureen Rainey, both of Mesa, Arizona, and Carol Sorensen (Phillip) of Alta, Wyoming; 27 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
