Joseph Wasson son of John M./Prudence was born 1839 two miles east of Congress Village, OH, and until the age of 18 remained on the farm, when he first began ventures on the world. He has spent much of his life upon the Pacific coast where he has achieved a reputation as a writer. He has been a newspaperman for years, acting as editor, proprietor, and manager. He was one of the early contributors to the Overland Monthly. He was in the campaign and within twelve miles of Custer when he was destroyed by Indians. Joseph Wasson's great work was the establishment of the State Mining and Mineral Bureau of San Francisco, while in the legislature from Mono County. In recognition of his services, a handsome oil painting hangs in the place of honor in that department. and it is as "Father of the Mining Bureau" . Joseph Wasson never married. He died at San Blas Mexico where he was Consul in 1883. His brother John Wasson of Arizona was also a newspaperman.
