Obituary

East Bend - Dorothy Evelyn Winfrey Matthews, 78, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Yadkin Nursing Care Center. She was born September 13, 1937 in Forsyth County to the late Thomas and Leontice Starbuck Winfrey.

Dorothy graduated from Mineral Springs High School. She was a member of the Northwest District for UMW, and also a member of the East Bend Fireman's Ladies Auxiliary. She was best known for her baking and sewing. Dorothy also enjoyed reading.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her son, Anthony Gene Matthews; sister, Annie Parent; brothers, Troy Winfrey, Carl Winfrey, and Jack Winfrey.

Surviving are her husband, Arzie Jay Matthews; children, Mavis (Charles) Dillon, Ryan (Karen) Matthews; grandchildren, Kasey (Erik) Newsom, Thomas Matthews, Mary Ellen Dillon, Brandon Matthews, Deacon Matthews; step grandchildren, Charlie Dillon, Dermont Dillon; great grandchildren, Scarlett Shoemaker, Jackson Shoemaker, Elliot Newsom.

Her funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robin Fitzgerald. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2016 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville.
