Joseph E. Leatherwood of Route 5, Greenville, retired United Methodist minister, died at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday in Citizens General Hospital. He was 86.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Kavanaugh United Methodist Church with Rev. Kenneth Shamblin, Don Renshaw and Dan Luper officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Born April 9, 1899 in Hunt County, he was the son of Robert Acquilla and Mary Jane Fleet Leatherwood. He attended Wesley College in Greenville and George William College in Chicago.

As a teenager, Rev. Leatherwood became a local preacher, but he was in YMCA work for many years before going into the full-time ministry in 1949. He pastored numerous Methodist churches in Texas. Rev. Leatherwood was a member of Kavanaugh Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie Davis Leatherwood of Greenville; daughers, Mrs. Joe Day of Greenville and Mrs. Harold Luper of Knoxville, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Mrs. Bill R. Cook of Greenville; sisters, Lula Leatherwood of Greenville and Mrs. Raymond Skinner of Sulphur Springs; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, six sisters and his first wife, Sallie Wineinger Leatherwood.

Pallbearers will be Audette Vick, D.A. Steele, Leon Wineinger, Tom Bailey, Harry Stockhoff and Chris Cook. Honorary pallbearers are James Coe, Robert Henson, Hyatt Cheek, and Steve Cook.
