Mary Lena (Cooper) Altom, 89, left her earthly home and joined her family and friends in Heaven Wednesday, August 17, 2016, after an extended illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac (Jack) Altom; father and mother, Dee and Mollie Cooper; brothers, J. D., Cecil and Douglas Cooper; sister, Imogene Ratledge; and several nephews and nieces.
Mary Lena was a member of Amis Chapel United Methodist Church. She was a school teacher in the Hawkins County School System for several years. She enjoyed calling friends and sending cards to them for all occasions.
She is survived by her brothers, Hanes, Surgoinsville, Roy (Kay), Church Hill and Robert (Betty), Surgoinsville; sisters-in-law, Betty (Doug) Cooper, Surgoinsville, and Evelyn Carpenter, Rogersville; several nephews and nieces; step daughters, Bridgette Sheehorn, California, Benita Ferrell, Oak Ridge, and Brenda Altom, Knoxville.
At Mary's request, a graveside service will be held at Bethel Cemetery at 2:00 pm Friday, August 19, 2016. The public is welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Bethel Cemetery Fund, c/o Charlotte Blair, 3774 Stanley Valley Rd, Surgoinsville, TN 37873.
The family would like to thank niece Robin Hoffman for her initial care and continued assistance, as well as the staff at Asbury Place for their help and kindness during the time she spent there and to Dr. Amy Haynes.
