John Pittman Johnston was the son of Sterling and Sarah McGregor. He was known as "Jack" in the Littleton area. He married Rebecca Harvey in Halifax County on Feb 16th 1824. His will was written 13 Feb 1875 and proved 26 Feb 1884 in Warren County. He stated that his land was to be divided between his four youngest sons.It was stipulated that the land was not to be divided until his wife's death. The division of the land was not made until 28 Feb 1891.

He was the father of twelve children(all born in Warren County North Carolina):
