Esther was a decedent of the earliest settlers of Fulton County. Her lineage included the French Huguenots and the seceeders and covenanters of Scotland and Ireland and a Native American.
She received her elementary education at the one-room Cito School and graduated from McConnellsburg High School. She attended Juniata College before enrolling in and graduating from the Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, PA. She volunteered for the Red Cross Nursing Service and the Army Nurse Corps. She was on active duty from May 1941 to February 1946 and served more than three years in the African-European Theatre. Her civilian employment included as a school nurse for the James Buchanan School District and staff and a supervisory position with the Pennsylvania Dept. of Health. She had received her education degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1949. During employment she was active in many health and welfare organizations.
Since retirement she has devoted much time collecting and recording family, local and church history. She served congregations as a church historian.
Esther was a member of the Red Cross Nursing Service, the Community Emergency Reserve Team, the McConnellsburg United Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Fulton County Historical Society, the Fulton County Medical Center Auxiliary, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She had been a member of the Franklin County Daughters of the American Revolution.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son Charles W., brothers Hollis Mellott and Carl N. Mellott and one sister Marian Spancake.
She is survived by one son John H. Nelson of Hagerstown, MD, daughter in law Lorrie A. Nelson, widow of Charles and their son Logan of Hagerstown, MD.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 16 at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home in McConnellsburg, PA with visitation one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in Union Cemetery in McConnellsburg, PA.
