Harburd Cooley, born in August 1806 in Darlington, South Carolina, was the son of Nancy Bounds Cooley (1784-1857) and William Cooley (1785-1850).

Harbard Cooley - In 1830, Census shows his home as Wayne County, MS; In 1840, Jasper County (believed near Heidelberg); In 1850, Jasper County; In 1860, Wayne County (near Waynesboro). He died in 1867 in Wayne County, Ms.

1. Albert F. Cooley, b. 1827, MS; d. 1885, Wayne Co., MS
2. Martin Van Buren Cooley, (?)
3. Nelson Leonidas Cooley, b. 1836; d. 1865 {1850 census
has his age as 10.}
4. Littleberry Cooley,
5. Moses Cooley, b. 3/14/1832, MS; d. 1922

All five sons served in the Confederate Army. Mr. Cooley and his wife suffered five sons at war simultaneously, which must have been especially difficult. Some say that Harburd served as a soldier in Company F, 8th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry as a private. However, at age fifty-five, he would have been too old. There was a soldier that served in the 8th with the same name. However, he enlisted 27 July 1861 in Shubuta, MS, and mustered in at Beavers Dam. He was 19 at the time and likely a relative.

Notes: Census 1850, Jasper County, MS.

Married Esther Sumrall in the year of 1830 in Mississippi. Daughter of Moses Sumrall and Mary Parker. Born 1806 in Chesterfield, SC, and died 1907 in Wayne County, MS. (Chesterfield to Darlington is about forty road miles.)

Female Children (1850 census)
1. Eleanor Cooley, b. 1834, MS; m. William R Stevens
2. Nancy Cooley, b. 1835, MS
