Carmela Hubbard: Aug. 1, 1908 - Oct. 2, 2005: Carmela Hubbard, a lifelong Buffalo resident who worked at the former Hotel Statler, died Sunday in the Hawthorn Health Multicare Center of respiratory failure. She was 97.
Born Carmela nardozzi in Buffalo, Mrs. Hubbard, who was known as Millie, lived on Busti Avenue on the West Side for 80 years.
She was a waitress at several restaurants in the 1930s and 1940s until World War II, when she worked as a spot welder for Curtiss-Wright Aircraft. She was cited for her workmanship and used to compare welding to sewing.
"I welded like I sew - even stitches, even welds," she used to say.
She was most remembered as the coat checkroom lady for the Hotel Statler, now Statler Towers, where she had worked from 1954 to 1980 and rubbed elbows with many of the area's prominent citizens.
She outlived two husbands, George Sawyer, who died in 1936, and Arthur Hubbard, who died in 1958.
Survivors include a son, Arthur of Buffalo, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9;30 am Wednesday in Holy Cross Catholic Church, at Maryland and Seventh Streets.
