ROCKFORD - Donald E. "Shorty" Vaughan, 79, of Rockford passed from this life in the presence of his loving family at 4:25 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2003, in SwedishAmerican Hospital emergency room after a long illness. Born Dec. 9, 1923, to John Evan and Minnie Dahl Vaughan in Beloit, Wis. Married Avis Lawrence in Rockford on March 3, 1945. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Was employed as a tool and die maker working for Rockford Products for 45 years, retiring in 1986. Member of the Belvidere Moose Club 295 where he was the treasurer and trustee and belonged to the Order of Fellowship. Member of VFW 9759, charter member of the LLL Club. He loved fishing, gardening and was an excellent cook. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Avis Vaughan sons, Larry M. (Pat) Vaughan of Rockford and Donald R. (Anita) Vaughan of Roscoe daughter, Judy (Roger) Gray of Machesney Park sister, Dorothy Barlow of Indiana grandchildren, Rich Fiedler, Don (Heidi) Fiedler, Shelly (Richard) List, Kasondra (Dr. Brian) LaMere, Lorrie (Aaron) Wolf, Leslie (Aaron) McVay, Donald (Stephanie) Vaughan Jr., Nicole (Harold) Hitchcock, Lance (Mary) Blake and 20 loving great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents and one brother.

Services at 1 p.m. Monday, June 30, in Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park, with the Rev. Tommy Simpson, pastor of Central Christian Church, officiating. Private entombment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 29, in the funeral home. 6-29-2
